It Has Taken Me A Little While

It has taken me a little while,
Longer than others,
To work out who I am.

Does where I’m from matter?
Do my roots (or lack thereof) inform my present?
Is understanding my history of importance,
And does what I love and hate play a part?

It has taken me a little while.

It has taken me a while,
Longer than others,
To work out what I stand for.

Are things as black and white as they seem?
Does my faith really make a difference and
if so what does that mean?

Can I love people fully and freely,
Even those You feel are not,
who you think they should be?

It has taken me a little while.

It has taken me a while,
Longer than others,
To learn that not everyone is going to understand,
Not everyone is going to agree.
That not everyone is going to like me,
And not everyone going to see,
How I see.

And that’s okay.

It has taken me a little while.

It has taken me a while,
Longer than others,
To be ready to take risks,
Be myself fully,
And challenge the status quo
Without the fear of rejection.

It has taken me a little while.

It has taken me a while,
And truth is, I have not yet arrived.

I’m still working things out,
Sharpening the vision,
Writing it down and making it plain,
But I am further along than I have ever been.

It has taken me a while but finally
I have come to a point of readiness.
Ready to take on what I must,
Face what I am called to and
make a difference in the way I know how.

It has taken me a little while,

And it will probably take a while longer,
To see the fruits of this journey come to pass,

It has taken me a little while,
but at least I’ve made a start.
